About us
GBIF—the Global Biodiversity Information Facility—is an international open data infrastructure, funded by governments. It allows anyone, anywhere to access data about all types of life on Earth, shared across national boundaries via the Internet. By encouraging and helping institutions to publish data according to common standards, GBIF enables research not possible before, and informs better decisions to conserve and sustainably use the biological resources of the planet. GBIF operates through a network of nodes, coordinating the biodiversity information facilities of Participant countries and organizations, collaborating with each other and the Secretariat to share skills, experiences and technical capacity. GBIF's vision: "A world in which biodiversity information is freely and universally available for science, society and a sustainable future."

Two new eDNA metabarcoding datasets from the Galápagos Marine Reserve are o-fish-ally available on GBIF! 🐠 Generated from standardized seawater sampling across 23 sites, these datasets characterize marine vertebrate communities using mitochondrial 12S rRNA markers. The datasets support research into topics including diversity patterns, community turnover and connectivity, particularly interactions between biological and physical processes in marine ecosystems. 👣 Helping companies move from data to action 🌱 Wrapping up GBIF’s suite of events at the Global Nature Positive Summit, GBIF’s Head of Advancement and Communications Kyle Copas presented and joined a panel discussion on Nature Footprint, a life cycle assessment approach that applies GBIF-mediated to provide quantitative assessment of biodiversity risk to companies set on becoming nature positive. The discussion highlighted how industry and corporate reporting tools can already apply data from the GBIF network to bend the curve of nature-related impacts from negative to positive. 🐝 Waseda University Ministry of the Environment, Japan National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) Norinchukin Bank Shiseido Nature Positive Initiative #GNPS2026

🏯 From Daejeon to Kumamoto, Joe Miller and Kyle Copas are heading to the Global Nature Positive Summit 2026 in #Japan this week! The Summit brings together leaders from around the world to accelerate implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), showcasing nature-positive strategies and outcomes. This year's programme places a particular focus on the role of the private sector and local governments in delivering the GBF and advancing the #NaturePositive agenda. 🩶 As a silver sponsor, GBIF is proud to be part of the event. Be sure to catch Joe and Kyle's presentations on Wednesday! 🔗https://lnkd.in/gUEpvWyG #GNPS2026 #Biodiversity Nature Positive Initiative Japan Committee for IUCN UN Biodiversity Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Sekisui House US Holdings, LLC Think Nature Inc. 🌿 Businesses have a critical role in mobilizing biodiversity data to support science, policy and nature-positive action The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) (TNFD) has highlighted the importance of scaling up corporate contributions of open biodiversity data to the GBIF network. By sharing biodiversity data collected through ongoing monitoring and assessments, companies can transform the value of often fragmented information and enable it to improve knowledge resources they depend on, like the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. By hearing perspectives and joining discussions with the business sector at the Global Nature Positive Summit in #Japan next week, GBIF hopes to help businesses build new pathways for delivering nature-positive outcomes. These collaborations can shape approaches for business, finance and governance that place sustainability and biodiversity at the heart of decision-making. 🌍 Nature Positive Initiative

🧽 Soak-up the new datasets shared by NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration to GBIF and OBIS: Ocean Biodiversity Information System! Featuring incredible species like the E.T sponge 👽 the new datasets document three remotely operated vehicle expeditions off the United States West Coast and Alaska on NOAA Ship #Okeanos Explorer in 2023. Deep-dive the data🌊:🔗https://lnkd.in/eEapDe4j
By sharing the data we collect during our exploration of the deep ocean, NOAA Ocean Exploration opens the door to discovery. This “E.T. sponge” (Advhena magnifica) — one of the World Register of Marine Species’ top-10 remarkable new marine species of 2020 — is just one of the discoveries made based on our data. Now, to expand the reach and scientific impact of our data, we’re making annotations of biological occurrence data (observations and samples) collected during expeditions on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer available through global databases, starting with datasets from expeditions off the U.S. West Coast and Alaska in 2023.
