Eliminating barriers. Inspiring young minds.
About us
Education transforms lives. First Book is building a world where every child has access to a quality education. We work to remove barriers to education and level the playing field for kids in need. At the heart of our work are the 600,000+ members of the First Book Network, the largest online community of individual educators, professionals and volunteers dedicated to supporting children living in low-income communities across North America. This Network is the key to creating lasting change. Through our research arm, First Book Research & Insights, we conduct studies that aggregate their voices to identify challenges, needs, and solutions. To address their needs, we provide free and low-cost books, resources and access to leading experts through the First Book Marketplace, which uses aggregated buying power to support their work. Founded in Washington D.C. in 1992 as a nonprofit social enterprise, First Book is dedicated to eliminating barriers to learning and inspiring young minds. As screen time increases over the summer, many parents and educators wonder how they can ensure that time meaningfully supports learning and curiosity. In partnership with Google Play, First Book is helping answer that question by curating a collection of Teacher Approved apps for children ages 12 and under. This work is grounded in direct input from First Book educators through surveys and focus groups conducted by First Book Research & Insights. Educators shared a clear need for safe, high-quality digital resources to help keep students engaged, especially outside of the classroom. In response, this curated collection and companion guide are designed to help families and educators turn everyday screen time into an opportunity to build literacy skills and support continued learning. 👉 Explore the collection and full guide: https://lnkd.in/dW9eaS3W #DigitalLearning #EdTech #SummerLearning #FirstBook #LearningInnovation

This story is a great example of how creativity can support learning. Through First Book's partnership with the LEGO Group, this librarian made sure every student at one school went home with books and LEGO bricks to keep learning and exploring beyond the classroom. 👉Read more: https://lnkd.in/dUUDv9KD #Partnerships #CorporateResponsibility #Librarians

Ensuring children have books of their own during the summer months is a simple but powerful way to support learning and set students up for success in the fall. Unfortunately, too many children don’t have their own books at home. Some families can’t afford to buy them or don’t live near a public library. First Book is working hard to change this and we need your support. With your gift, kids can grow their love for reading with books they can call their own. 👉 Make your summer gift today: https://lnkd.in/d4bbi8ET #SummerReading #SummerSlide #FirstBook #Education #DonateNow #Donation

For children in under-resourced communities, summer break often means limited access to reading materials, increasing the risk of falling behind. This phenomenon, known as the “summer slide,” can have lasting impacts on student success. At First Book, we work to ensure kids have books of their own to continue learning beyond the classroom, especially in the summer months. With your support, educators and programs can put high-quality books directly into students’ hands, helping them maintain and build critical reading skills all year long. 🔗 Help stop the summer slide: https://lnkd.in/daJ5hbap #FirstBook #SummerReading #NonprofitImpact #LiteracyMatters #GiveBack

Across six countries, Time for Change is now reaching more than 7 million students and 200,000 educators. This shared initiative led by Ashoka, First Book, and Teach For All, in collaboration with Audemars Piguet under the guidance of the Audemars Piguet Foundations, is building momentum toward our goal of embedding changemaking into everyday learning. Beyond the numbers, what stands out is how this impact takes shape on the ground: In Lagos, Nigeria, a teacher who went through a Time for Change sponsored training program designed for educators in public secondary schools began to shift his classroom approach. Instead of focusing only on content delivery, he created space for students to take more ownership of their learning. First Book is proud to have co-led the development of resources used in the teacher training program. From that shift, Peer Power emerged: a student-led tutoring initiative where learners support each other in English, Mathematics, and Science. As a result, students started approaching learning through empathy, encouragement, and shared responsibility. Over time, confidence grew on both sides, and those who had struggled began to improve and believe in their own abilities. The initiative later received national recognition in Nigeria. But its most meaningful outcome reflects a broader pattern across Time for Change in all six countries where the initiative has come to life: when educators are equipped with the right tools and mindset, they unlock behaviors that extend well beyond the classroom. #TimeForChange #Ashoka #AudemarsPiguet #TeachForAll #First Book #AudermarsPiguet Foundations #Changemakers #GlobalImpact #YouthLeadership #YoungChangemakers #SocialImpact

KPMG employee volunteers stepped into classrooms and community programs, connecting directly with educators and students. These efforts demonstrate how corporate partnerships can expand access to books, support education, and create lasting impact. 👉 Read more: https://bit.ly/43DTw05 #FirstBook #KPMG #KFFL #CorporatePartnerships #EmployeeEngagement #LiteracyLeadership #CommunityImpact
