About us

We provide software solutions to prevent mutual interference of critical embedded applications when running in a common hardware platform (virtualization). Our hypervisor, XtratuM is space qualified for the ARM Cortex-R5 and A9 and for the rad-hard processor LEON3 of the European Space Agency. XtratuM enables the use of mixed-criticality systems running in the same (multi)core hardware platform. It is a perfect solution for micro and nano satellites and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles requiring to minimize size and weight. XtratuM is complemented by our own LithOS ARINC-653 run-time system and our Xoncrete schedulability analysis tool. Do you want to meet us?   • Last week, FENTISS team attended SmallSat Europe! 🛰️ Manuel Muñoz, CEO at FENTISS, Vicente N., Programme Manager, and Ana Rísquez Navarro, Marketing and Sales Representative, attended this annual fair to communicate the advantages of using XtratuM hypervisor for space missions. This annual event was a great opportunity to exchange ideas on how XtratuM hypervisor can support more scalable and secure flight architectures in satellite systems in the industry. A big thank you to everyone who took the time to meet, share ideas, and grab a coffee with us. The space industry is moving fast, and we are proud to be part of it.     In 2022, with the qualification of the GR740 QML-V/Q Flight Models, we achieved the highest levels of qualification for the space environment. These qualified flight models represent the culmination of years of design, testing, and refinement, ensuring that the GR740 can withstand the most demanding missions. It’s a story of perseverance and precision. To match the qualified GR740 flight models, we released the GR-SBC-GR740 single-board computer (SBC). The GR740, paired with 512 MiB of EDAC-protected SDRAM, delivers exceptional performance in a compact form factor, making it the perfect choice to control small satellites and payloads. It offers high-performance computing platform for space applications, a small form factor (96x120mm), a single DC +5V power supply, multiple SpaceWire links. Support is also offered for the VxWorks, PikeOS and RTEMS operating systems, the GRBOOT flight-qualified boot loader, and the TSIM3-LEON4 instruction-level simulator. To support the European Space Agency - ESA initiative on Advanced Data Handling Architecture (ADHA), we released a reference design and basic software for a single board computer based on the GR740 utilizing the CompactPCI Serial Space form factor. The reference design data package consists of schematics and other design files required for developing a single board computer for flight. In 2022 we also taped-out the SQUAL4C demonstrator on STMicroelectronics 28nm FD-SOI (Fully Depleted - Silicon On Insulator) technology using their radiation-hardened GEO P2 library. The design featured the fault-tolerant LEON5FT and NOEL-V FT processor IP cores and the purpose of the test chip was to test and evaluate radiation-hardened computing solutions for the space environment, particularly focusing on Single Event Effects (SEE) characterization. The results from the successful SQUAL4C radiation testing determined the path forward for the GR765 development.   Also in 2022, the De-RISC NOEL-V Development Platform was released – a  groundbreaking, European-developed hardware/software system for space and aviation, leveraging the open-source RISC-V architecture, featuring our NOEL-V multicore processor, and integrating FENTISS's XtratuM hypervisor for secure time/space partitioning, aiming to provide high-performance, radiation-hardened computing with reduced licensing costs, enabling complex, mixed-critical applications in satellites and aerospace.   As part of our GRLIB IP core library, we released the NANDFCTRL2, a VHDL IP core implementing a NAND flash memory controller designed to operate with ONFI 4.0 devices and providing DMA transfers to and from the NAND flash memory.     U-Space and FENTISS: A long-term partnership! ✍ We are delighted to announce the signing of a long-term agreement with FENTISS, provider of the XtratuM / Next Generation (XNG) hypervisor, a software solution that has been at the heart of our systems since our inception. While XtratuM is already the beating heart of our flight software, this agreement secures and perpetuates the use of this key technology for all our future constellations. Why is XtratuM the cornerstone of our onboard architecture? The XNG software allows us to apply a strict partitioning strategy within a single onboard computer. In concrete terms, this offers us two key advantages: • Unfailing reliability Thanks to partitioning, any error remains confined and does not spread, ensuring total control of the satellite. • Valuable hardware optimization This architecture ensures a high level of safety without increasing the number of onboard computers, allowing for weight and volume savings without compromising safety. This agreement marks a new stage in our collaboration with this long-standing trusted partner, and we are delighted to be working with them on a long-term basis for both our current products and future developments.

    🚀 FENTISS and U-Space Sign 4-Year Long Term Agreement to Power Next-Gen Satellite Constellations 🤝 Formalized last week at Space Tech Expo Europe 2025 in Bremen, this agreement supports U-Space’s projected exponential growth as they prepare to deploy their next-generation spacecrafts. 📈 With U-Space ramping up production to launch multiple satellites in the coming years, they will integrate the XtratuM Next Generation (XNG) hypervisor into their modular platforms to handle this increasing demand. 🛰️ This collaboration enables the safe, simultaneous execution of critical and non-critical applications on shared hardware. It was a fantastic opportunity not just to present XtratuM, but to dive deep into the real-world challenges in space missions.
