The UN will have a new Secretary-General taking office on January 1, 2027. What kind of leader does the moment actually call for? Qahir Dhanani argues the next UN chief has to be two things at once. First, a custodian anchored in the institution's founding pillars - peace, development, and human rights - and its history. Second, an architect who is willing to reimagine how the institution delivers for a very different world than the one it was built for. Watch the full episode for more from Qahir on rebuilding institutional trust, the role of coalitions, reform vs. modernization, and what comes next for multilateralism. We explore how the forces of fragility interact and manifest across complex human and natural systems.
About us
F-World exists to spark a global conversation about fragility and resilience. F-World is the only podcast exploring fragility across all countries, not just those traditionally thought of as fragile and conflict-affected. We will discuss the forces of fragility wherever they emerge, from the Western world to West Africa and beyond. We aim to bring an awareness of the interconnections between people, events, and structures, and a recognition that their interplay is not always straightforward. We believe that when people better understand the forces shaping their lives, they can act and engage in society more effectively. Through our long- form interviews, we aim to make the concept of fragility accessible to the broadest audience by engaging meaningfully in conversations that usually take place only among a narrow set of experts. We believe that everyone benefits when experts talk about complex issues in ways that are rigorous, yet down to earth. Even more, we want to discover our guests’ personal stories – who they are, what they believe, and what drives them. The views expressed in this podcast are those of the co-hosts in their personal capacity and do not represent the views of their employers or any other institution they may be associated with.

What does "multilateralism" actually mean and why should we care? In this clip from our conversation with Qahir Dhanani, we ask him to define the term beyond the summits and headlines. His answer: multilateralism quietly underpins everyday life - from the telecom standards that let your phone work abroad, to the agreements that keep air travel running on schedule. It's a great reminder that international cooperation isn't just abstract diplomacy - it's infrastructure we rely on every day, often without noticing. Watch the full episode for more from Qahir on institutional reform, #AI governance, and the future of the UN. What is the future of multilateralism? From the role of middle powers and the private sector, to UN reform and AI governance, Qahir Dhanani brings a wealth of experience and insight to the conversation in our latest episode! A few highlights: ➡️ Why multilateralism is the quiet architecture behind everyday things like telecom standards and air travel ➡️ The rise of "variable geometry" — coalitions of small and middle powers stepping up on shared challenges from digital governance to AI ➡️ What it means for the incoming UN Secretary-General to act as an architect rather than just a custodian of the institution ➡️ How AI might help institutions move faster without losing the safeguards that matter ➡️ How the private sector's relationship with multilateral institutions is shifting — from purely transactional deals to genuine collaboration ➡️ Why he sees Africa as the next frontier for innovation and investment Thank you, Qahir, for such a generous and rich conversation!
