    On April 13, 2029, an asteroid named Apophis will pass closer to Earth than many of our satellites. Billions of people will see it with the naked eye. It will not hit us. But this is not just a spectacle. It is a warning. Apophis is roughly 1,000 feet across, traveling at nearly 70,000 miles per hour. An impact would release the equivalent of 1,000 megatons of TNT. The consequences would be global. This close approach gives us something rare: a chance to study how a potentially hazardous asteroid responds to gravitational tides, knowledge that is essential to any real planetary defense capability. NASA's OSIRIS-APEX mission will analyze Apophis after the flyby. ESA's RAMSES mission aims to rendezvous with it before. These are important, but more is needed. This is where commercial space is entering the equation in a big way. Companies like ExLabs are developing their own Apophis missions — deploying hosted payloads and close-proximity observation systems to expand access and lower cost. As ExLabs CEO Matthew Schmidgall put it, planetary defense has to be repeatable, and that means building systems that allow more participants to operate beyond Earth orbit. That shift matters. Planetary defense is no longer the sole domain of national space agencies. It is becoming an ecosystem — public institutions, private companies, international partnerships, and new entrants who have never before participated in deep space missions. I am excited about this shift and about what a company like ExLabs is bringing to the table for planetary defense. That is why the State of Planetary Defense panel at the upcoming Space Symposium matters, and if you are planning to be there I encourage you to join us at 12:15PM on Thursday, April 16th. Alignment across NASA, ESA, JAXA, UNOOSA, commercial space, and the scientific community is not optional. No single entity solves this alone. Apophis gives us a rare alignment of timing, visibility, and capability. The work happening now is a critical first step toward making planetary defense real and repeatable.
