This phenomenon, known as leakage current, may start subtly but can escalate under the right conditions. As current travels across the contaminated surface, it generates heat and can create dry bands that lead to partial discharges and arcing. Over time, these arcs can ignite surrounding materials—such as wooden poles, crossarms, or nearby vegetation—leading to pole fires that cause outages, infrastructure damage, and potential wildfire risk.
