Waste and Downtime Essentials 3/4: Planned vs. Unplanned Downtime ⏱️ Not all downtime is the same. Some of it you schedule, and some of it is unexpected. Both cost you production time, but they can both be reduced with the correct tools and attention. ➡ Planned Downtime is downtime often factored into the schedule. This includes routine maintenance and inspections, changeovers and setup time, and employee breaks and shift changes. ➡ Unplanned Downtime is downtime that strikes without warning and can have disastrous consequences for production schedules. It typically occurs due to equipment failures, material shortages, and unscheduled stoppages like power outages, human error, or safety incidents. Though unplanned downtime is always included in OEE, in theory, most planned stops should also be included. But in practice, there is a tendency to exclude all planned downtime from OEE. This makes your OEE look good, but if you exclude planned downtime from the calculation, you are not getting a realistic picture of what you can achieve. For example, some manufacturers might categorize changeovers as planned downtime. If your fastest changeover takes 20 minutes, but some take 25 or 40, there’s additional time going unnoticed. In this case, OEE is inflated whenever it goes over 20 minutes. The goal should be to set a changeover limit for 20 minutes (excluded from OEE), and every minute that goes over the limit is categorized as unplanned and reduces OEE. Managing downtime effectively means two different approaches: 1️⃣ Reduce planned downtime with smarter scheduling and implementing lean principles. 2️⃣ Cut unplanned downtime with real-time monitoring and preventive maintenance. Waste and Downtime Essentials 2/4: The 7 Green Wastes 🌱 Green Manufacturing is a framework that has evolved from the Lean methodology and helps manufacturers move toward sustainable operations. In Lean manufacturing, waste is viewed from the customer perspective. But there is another type of waste — Green waste, where it is measured from the environment’s perspective. Here are the 7 Green Wastes: 1️⃣ Energy — The inefficient or excessive use of electricity and fuels required to power machinery and facilities. 2️⃣ Water — A resource manufacturers often pay for twice: once to bring it in, and once to discharge it as wastewater. 3️⃣ Materials — Continuous consumption of raw inputs that ultimately end up in a landfill at the end of a product's lifecycle. 4️⃣ Garbage — The cost of disposal. You pay for the item first, pay to have it hauled away, and potentially pay a third time via carbon offsets if it contributes to your GHG emissions. 5️⃣ Transportation — The unnecessary or unoptimized movement of people, materials, suppliers, and finished goods. 6️⃣ Emissions — Beyond the environmental cost, emissions often carry fines and compliance fees. 7️⃣ Biodiversity — Clearing land or filling a watershed to build new facilities carries costs long before the environmental impact is even factored in. Introducing Colorblind mode – a new accessibility update to Shift View 🎨 According to Colour Blind Awareness, color blindness (color vision deficiency, or CVD) affects approximately 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women. With the global manufacturing workforce being roughly 70% male, it likely affects a significant number of people on the shop floor. The most common form is known as red/green color blindness, which means those affected can easily confuse colors that contain red or green as part of the overall color. Our team realized that this could be impacting Evocon users, as Shift View relies on color to separate stops, speed loss, and production states. If you can't easily tell colors apart, that information is harder to use, and you can lose time figuring out what's happening on the floor. What’s new? With Colorblind mode enabled, the colors in the Shift View change to a higher-contrast palette, or have added patterns where needed. Now, users can accurately read the data without guessing. Thanks to our product and development teams for making Evocon more accessible 👏

How does your manufacturing process change how you monitor OEE? Most OEE models were built for discrete manufacturing: counting parts, tracking speed, and rejecting defective units. But this logic shifts in a batch-processing environment, where you manage bulk formulas in intermittent runs. In our latest article, we look at Process Batch Manufacturing, common pitfalls when monitoring OEE in this environment, and how the three components of OEE shift in a batch process environment: ➡️ Availability — Often, time is lost during transitions between batches. Any changeover or cleaning (CIP) that runs beyond its standard target time is an Availability loss. ➡️ Performance — "Speed" is measured by duration. Each recipe step has a target time. Run long, and the system logs the difference as a performance loss. ➡️ Quality — Measured by volume or weight, rather than reject count. Essentially, you are comparing the amount of “good” material produced against the total amount started. As another global event “kicks off” this evening, Mr. Evocon is getting another outfit change ⚽ Over the next month, you’ll find him all kitted out and ready to “referee” production on the shop floor. For those new to Evocon’s Shift View, Mr. Evocon gives operators and teams immediate, visual feedback on how a shift is tracking against OEE targets: · When he’s happy ➡ shift OEE is meeting or exceeding targets. · When he’s unhappy ➡ it’s a signal that improvements are needed. · When he’s neutral ➡ performance is somewhere in between. This simple visual cue helps humanize performance data, making it easier to understand and discuss on the shop floor. While he loves getting dressed up for major global events, if you prefer the standard look, you can easily switch him back to his usual clothes in the View settings.
