Last week, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) authorized emergency actions to protect grid reliability during extreme heat. Under that authorization, PJM Interconnection directed data centers and other large facilities to run their backup generators during grid events, easing pressure on the grid when it matters most. Here's the catch: not all onsite generation is built for this. Systems designed only for emergency standby, intermittent generation, or continuous baseload output simply can't deliver the fast, dispatchable response grid stress events demand. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) latest orders underscore the value of ERock’s approach to flexible large loads and dispatchable onsite generation. By providing rapid, scalable access to power while reducing pressure on the grid, ERock proves that speed to power and ratepayer protection can go hand in hand. As large new loads continue to emerge, the industry is increasingly focused on how to deliver power quickly, fairly, and efficiently. The FERC orders require all six regional grid operators to justify or update their tariffs for data centers and other large energy users, representing an important step in that direction. This mandate aims to deliver the speed to power necessary to safeguard national security and support the innovation economy, all while protecting ratepayers. Specifically, the Commission is focusing on five reform categories: 1. Alternative transmission technologies to optimize the existing grid 2. Protecting everyday ratepayers from additional costs 3. Co-located arrangements and behind-the-meter generation 4. Flexible transmission options for large loads 5. Generation located near large energy users The FERC orders highlight how modular onsite generation, like ERock’s RockBlockᵀᴹ, can complement the existing grid as demand grows. Rapidly deployable generation can provide near-term capacity and support phased load growth, giving power intensive customers greater flexibility as grid infrastructure expands.
