The CMMC Phase II delay may be good news for small defense contractors. The underlying NIST 800-171 requirements still apply, but the immediate cost of a mandatory C3PAO assessment may be delayed. That gives contractors more time to strengthen security, fix gaps, and become compliant without rushing into unnecessary expenses. CMMC Phase II just got suspended. DoD is running a 60-day review before deciding what comes next. Doesn't mean you get to relax though. DFARS 252.204-7012 hasn't gone anywhere. If you handle CUI, you're still on the hook for protecting it, review or no review. Honestly, the smart contractors are going to treat this pause as free runway. Tighten up your cybersecurity program. Fix the gaps you've been meaning to fix. Get your SSP and evidence actually in order. As phase 2 for CMMC Level 2 is nearing, in November. CMMC is becoming more of a revenue requirement, not just an IT requirement. We are currently seeing so many companies reaching out because their primes, and partners are requiring them to get CMMC Level 2 to continue to do business with them. Just got back from DIBCON and one theme kept coming up in almost every conversation 👇 CMMC certification cost is becoming a major barrier for small manufacturers entering defense contracting. When participation shrinks, the entire ecosystem becomes less resilient. And that is not just a business issue — it is a national capability issue. Not lack of capability… not lack of demand… just cost + complexity. These are the backbone of our Defense Industrial Base, and many are now hesitating to pursue contracts because the path to compliance feels overwhelming and expensive. Microsoft pitches GCC High as the holy grail for defense contractors, but they’ve left a massive gap where the actual roadmap should be. There is no "Source of Truth"no centralized, definitive manual that tells you exactly when it’s a requirement, how it maps to specific CMMC controls, or how to migrate without blowing up your daily operations. Instead, the industry's go-to resource is literally a blog post from a staffer. That isn't a strategy; it’s a mess. We have contractors making six-figure infrastructure bets based on fragmented advice and "I heard from a guy" interpretations. When you're handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), "vague" is a liability you can't afford.
