Building more housing is important—but are we building evidence based healthier homes, or just more homes? To lawmakers, regulators, and housing leaders: As you work to address America's housing shortage, please also consider the health of the people who will live in these homes. Many policymakers don't realize that families living with injuries, asthma, allergies, or environmental sensitivities often spend 30–40% more to create a healthier living environment. These costs are rarely reflected in housing policy, building discussions, or affordability calculations. For me, that means investing in lower-emission furnishings that don't aggravate my collision injuries, along with a quality reverse osmosis water filtration and purification system to help reduce environmental triggers associated with my eczema. These healthier choices often cost significantly more upfront, yet they may help some individuals reduce exposure to environmental factors that can contribute to symptoms. Housing policy should not focus only on square footage, energy efficiency, or affordability. It should also encourage asking better questions about indoor air quality, water quality, ventilation, moisture management, building materials, and overall building performance. Based on my former USA manufacturers safety clinic experience, I learned that fresh air 100% matters. Today, as both a patient who monitors my environment and an indoor environmental consultant, my observations are consistent with research on transportation-related air pollution. Wildfire smoke can be much like sitting in heavy traffic with your car in recirculation mode—fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) and other pollutants can still infiltrate your vehicle cabin and your home, depending on air leakage, filtration, and ventilation. Monitor your indoor air. Learn your personal triggers. Use ventilation, filtration, air purification, and appropriate fresh air strategies when outdoor conditions permit to improve indoor air quality. During wildfire smoke events, bring in outdoor air only when it's cleaner than the air inside.
