Katharine Lin Head of Maths and Stacey Martin Head of Science will be at the Data in Schools conference this Thursday and Friday. They'll be digging into comparative data and working through how it can be used to identify and target student learning gaps. Ashley Evans and Annie Luu from our Client Team will be there too with some spicy goodies!

What better way to kick off our Network for Science Leaders than a banquet hosted by Kristy Kendall with 23 science leaders from Victorian secondary schools. In true Kristy style, we traversed the eras of past, present and future teaching and learning, with a provocation for every course. From what doesn't work from the past and should be let go off, differentiation and what to say no to, and what the future of teaching looks like with AI. Good food, great company and fabulous conversations. And, just the start of what we hope will be a space for the sharing of science education expertise and community connection. https://lnkd.in/gvgy3NSh Peter Goldsworthy Stacey Martin Alexis Beaumont Callista Nguyen Ashley Evans Clinton Milroy

It was such a treat to host a group of incredible and expert science teachers at Edrolo HQ last week. We spent the morning co-planning and creating resources to use the new 'Like a scientist' videos in class. Jane Bunn stopped by to share how she uses science skills to prepare the weekday weather forecasts for 7NEWS Australia Melbourne, along with some pro tips for presenting on camera. We all then jumped in the studio for some filming after lunch to put Jane's tips into practice. We recently caught up with Hollie, a Community and Family Studies (CAFS) teacher in NSW, who has developed a simple, yet effective approach to supporting student learning and building their accountability with Edrolo. It can replicated by any teacher and for any subject. "The higher ability students find more opportunities for extension, but equally the lower ability students come in with a pre-understanding of the key terms and terminology. So it's not information overload for them."

We're partnering with Greg Ashman PhD to build a comparative formative assessment for Years 7-10. The Maths, English, Science and Humanities Assessment (MESHA) provides comparative cohort insights to guide timely instructional action for teaching teams. Here Dr Ashman explains the goal of MESHA, and how teaching teams can use the comparative insights as a clear reference point across classes and schools to assess the curriculum and target student learning gaps. How can timely formative data at the student and class level, and comparative across schools, support effective teaching instruction? This is what we aimed to understand in our pilot Year 8 Maths assessment designed in partnership with Greg Ashman PhD. At #rEDBall26 last weekend Katharine Lin and Rex Roseman from our team shared the findings from the Term 3, 2025 pilot with Genazzano FCJ College Clonard College, Geelong Bialik College, Ballarat Clarendon College, Goulburn Valley Grammar School Ltd, Sacre Coeur and Mentone Girls' Grammar. What's most interesting is how the schools used the comparative data from their insights reports (provided within 10 days of the assessment) to inform instructional action within the same term. From tackling pervasive misconceptions and incorporating spaced retrieval into lesson planning, to streaming decisions and reviewing the use of student formula sheets. Here's a sneak peek at 'Like a scientist', the first explicit instruction series for teaching science skills from Years 7-10 🐋🐋🐋 In this sample from the Year 7 lesson on classification, learning begins with a simple, curiosity-driven question: Do whales have belly buttons? Students are invited to question, predict and justify their thinking from the outset. Coming later this year, we'll have a lesson for every Years 7-10 topic in the new Victorian Curriculum 2.0, to help schools explicitly teach and embed the Science Inquiry Skills.
