ecomaine's Multi-Family Recycling Initiative is a powerful multiplier in the effort to increase access to and participation in recycling programs across the state. We're proud to welcome Foreside Estates as a new partner in this work!
Foreside Estates is partnering with ecomaine and their Multi-Family Recycling Initiative team to increase recycling efforts at our apartment community! During the month of December, members of this team audited our waste and recycling receptacles weekly. Yesterday, I was able to meet with them as they presented their findings and recommendations. I was also lucky enough to be offered a private tour of their processing facilities ♻️ I am very excited about this partnership and can’t wait to begin implementing improvements to signage, education, and accessibility at our Foreside Estates community. #recycling #multifamily #housing #princetonapts

And yes, that forefront will be messy and full of challenges and learning moments, but what we learn will help lead the way as the rest of the U.S. follows. Our Communications Director, Lucy Sullivan, sat down with WCSH to talk about how to sustainably dispose tires (a question we get asked often here at ecomaine)! The answer? Look up your nearest VIP location to make sure they get recycled into new materials!
Happy to chat with Christian Harsa at WCSH this week about how to find a final resting place for those hard-to-dispose of items. In the case of tires, there are lots of options! Typically, if you're getting a new set, the place taking off your old tires will dispose of them at no cost. If you want to make sure they get recycled, look up your nearest VIP location - they accept them for a very small fee and they get recycled into things like playground surfaces and athletic mats. In the olden days, waste was "easier" to get rid of - you literally just put it where you couldn't see it anymore and bam! magic! you got rid of the waste! But as this story illustrates, that method of waste management just created bigger problems down the road. Today, it is a little more complicated to identify the best, safest path for bulky, hazardous, or unusual items. But the effort we put in now prevents problems (like tire-fishing) in the future. There aren't always one-size-fits-all answers, and the options may vary by community. But folks in your public works department and your friends here at ecomaine are happy to help you find the best solution. Spoiler alert: that solution is never "throw it in a river." 😬 P.S.
