  • The Ukrainian automotive market - particularly in the new car segment - is a very interesting case for research, especially when compared to other countries. It’s hard to find a market that is, on one hand, so large and relatively structured, and on the other hand so diverse in terms of brands and sources of vehicle origin. I would also add that even some of the European brands mentioned in the publication may actually have non-European, specifically Chinese, origins. At the same time - and this is important - BYD, which became the leader in new car sales in Ukraine in 2025, is 100% what is known as “parallel import”. This means all these vehicles were sold without official importers or dealers (as none currently exist), without warranty, and are essentially versions from the domestic Chinese market that are not adapted to EU standards. That said, there is one very important reason why Ukrainians were buying these cars: price. It is significantly lower compared to European alternatives, and import taxes on electric vehicles were zero - which is no less important.

Thanks to the high-quality insights shared with me by my friend Stanislav Buchatskyi, I can post today about the new car sales results in Ukraine last year. According to the data from Buchatskyi, the founder of Automotive Market Research Institute in Ukraine, a total of 79,929 new light vehicles were sold there in 2025. Despite the invasion from Russia, the sales increased by 16% vs 2024. In this troubled context, the Volkswagen group takes the leadership with 22% share, with its volume up by 33% vs 2024. This is a remarkable result considering that the Chinese competition is growing fast. Last year, BYD occupied the third position in the car groups ranking, with its volume soaring from 2,077 units in 2024 to 10,222 units in 2025. Unlike the regulated EU, in Ukraine it is easier to import cars from China. The share of the Chinese car brands totaled 20%, one of the highest in Europe. The figure excludes the sales of made-in-China cars sold from non-Chinese car brands (Volkswagen ID-Unyx for example). #carindustryanalysis #felipemunoz #automotive #ukraine #Україна
