Competitiveness participated in the III Manaca Congress, held in Puerto Inírida on March 18th, an important platform bringing together communities, producers, experts, and institutions around the sustainable use of this highly relevant Amazonian resource. At this event, our Senior Consultant, Carlos Sánchez Chica, presented the strategic analysis of the açaí (manaca) value chain as part of the project “Business development plans and technical assistance to strengthen the açaí value chain in Amazonian departments under a bioeconomy approach,” currently being implemented with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), in partnership with Fundación Victoria Regia. The presentation aimed to identify where value is created and captured along the chain, and to define strategic pathways to enhance its competitiveness in territories such as Guainía. Carlos also participated in a panel discussion alongside key ecosystem actors, including technical experts, entrepreneurs, and representatives from research institutions such as the SINCHI Institute. It was a valuable space for dialogue on sustainable use models, value addition, and key challenges in strengthening Amazonian value chains. We appreciate the exchange with distinguished panel participants, including Martha Isabel Vallejo, Biologist and Professor at Universidad Militar Nueva Granada; Diego Francisco Castro Rojas, Manager of PURAMAZONIA ZOMAC SAS BIC; Diego Carantón from the Instituto SINCHI; and Victor Martinez Yavinape, Founder and Manager of Matshukaj. The Congress reaffirmed the importance of building solutions from within the territory—integrating technical knowledge, local expertise, and market vision—to transform Guainía’s natural wealth into sustainable opportunities. At Competitiveness, we remain committed to strengthening value chains that drive economic, social, and environmental impact across the Amazon.

We participated, together with Technopolis Group, in the workshop “Progress Towards a PTI Agenda to Boost Agrifood Trade in Latin America and the Caribbean”, organized by the Inter-American Development Bank, where we shared insights from a jointly developed project in the Caribbean. During her intervention, our President, Saskia Bonnefoi, highlighted that strengthening food security requires not only increasing production, but also activating demand, improving access, and guiding consumption decisions as key pillars for building more resilient agri-food systems. Drawing on the Caribbean experience, the presentation showcased a methodological approach based on value chain analysis and direct engagement with public and private stakeholders, enabling a shift from diagnosis to concrete action. We thank the IDB for creating these spaces for dialogue and collaboration to advance more inclusive and resilient food systems across the region. #Competitiveness #Partnerships #AgriFoodSystems #FoodSecurity

COMPETITIVENESS led the project “Support for the Comité de Coordination pour les Filières Café et Cacao (CCFCC) to deepen the coffee and cocoa value chain development plans across the axes of productivity, markets, gender, environment and financing of the plans.”, funded by Stichting SNV Netherlands Development Organisation in Togo. In Togo, coffee and cocoa account for about 3% of GDP and over 30,000 direct jobs, with women’s participation around 11%. Does it matter where Togo sells its coffee and cocoa? With modest volumes, competing in mainstream segments limits value capture. The strategy is to pivot toward premium markets with sophisticated buyers who pay for quality and consistency. This work extended CCFCC’s PDCC through focused technical assistance to move from plan to execution. What was assessed and delivered: · Defined what is needed to grow premium coffee and cocoa in Togo, from farm practices to post-harvest procedures and proof of quality · Assessed the current status against the EU Zero-Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), detailed the gaps, and outlined how to organize the tasks to close them · Identified target markets and product-specific requirements to guide the upgrade path and build relationships with sophisticated buyers. · Proposed a two-person funding unit to source finance and support cooperatives in preparing applications · Reviewed the gender gap and pinpointed practical opportunities for women in quality upgrading and governance Thanks to CCFCC for the collaboration and the service to the sector, to SNV for supervision and steady support, to the EU Delegation for pushing impact, and to everyone who contributed along the way. #Togo #PremiumCoffee #PremiumCocoa #EUDR #Competitiveness #ValueChains #Policy #Women4Quality #CCFCC #SNV #GIZ #ICRFacility #EUDTogo
