Congratulations to Cristoso Apache, who was recently named the next Poet Laureate for the state of Colorado. Apache is a member of the Mescalero Apache, Chiricahua Apache and Diné (Navajo) tribes, and is the first indigenous poet to serve as a Laureate. Thanks to the Colorado Humanities, Center for the Book, and Colorado Creative Industries (CCI) funding, Apache will be able to travel across the state for readings and events to encourage youth and new audiences to the power of poetry and its transformative power. Did you know that Colorado was one of the first states to have a Poet Laureate (starting with Alice Polk Hill in 1919.) Last week, Colorado Humanities and their partners welcomed the newest Colorado Poet Laureate to continue this century-long tradition. Crisosto is Mescalero Apache, Chiricahua Apache, and Diné (Navajo). They are an Associate Professor at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design Crisosto describes the role they are about to boldy take on this way: “To serve as Poet Laureate of Colorado is to write from a landscape that teaches us how to listen..." https://lnkd.in/gqr5hrBZ

This two-day training prepares participants to facilitate reflective discussions across differences on topics like race and ethnicity, dying and grief, veteran experiences, and change in rural Colorado. Those who complete the training will be certified to facilitate conversations with Colorado Humanities across the state. Earlier this year, we had the chance to sit down with Byron Graves, author of Rez Ball in celebration of his book being selected to represent Colorado at the National Book Festival alongside Blood Betrayal by Ausma Zehanat Khan. In 2024, we partnered with Cine Fe, a Colorado filmmaker incubator, to host screenings and discussions highlighting films by and about underrepresented Americans. In the Dirt at the ACT Human Rights Film Festival followed Native American cyclists brought mountain biking to the Navajo Nation. Las Promotoras at XicanIndie Film Fest explored Cultivando’s fight to end pollution in a predominantly Hispanic community through bilingual discussions. Audiences also experienced Amache Rose with Colorado Dragon Boat at the Denver Botanic Gardens, reflecting on resilience, memory, and the history of the Amache internment camp. Finally, in collaboration with Ferment and Sie FilmCenter, we presented T and MnM, short films highlighting Ballroom culture’s power to heal and build community. We believe in film’s power to spark connection, honor community, and uplift voices that too often go unheard.
