For Canadians aged 65 and older with significant assets, Alter Ego and Joint Partner Trusts have become an increasingly common part of the estate planning conversation. An Alter Ego Trust allows an individual to transfer assets into a trust during their lifetime while continuing to access the income and capital. A Joint Partner Trust works similarly for spouses or common-law partners. In many cases, eligible assets can be transferred into these trusts on a tax-deferred basis, avoiding an immediate capital gains tax event. So why are more Canadians considering them? • Assets held in the trust generally bypass probate • The trust agreement remains private, unlike a probated will • They can provide greater control over how assets are managed and distributed • They may help simplify estate administration for beneficiaries The probate benefit can be especially meaningful in provinces such as British Columbia and Ontario, where fees can become significant for estates with real estate, investments, or other high-value assets. Connect with your Clearline advisor to explore whether an Alter Ego or Joint Partner Trust may be appropriate for your estate plan. https://ow.ly/luG850ZlerR

After years of delays, the federal government has finalized new reporting rules for bare trusts and the first filing deadline is now set for March 31, 2027, covering the 2026 tax year. A bare trust exists whenever someone holds legal title to an asset on behalf of another person who retains actual ownership and control. This is more common than most people realize: a parent added to a child's property title to help with mortgage qualification, an "in trust for" account set up for a grandchild, or a nominee arrangement involving real estate or a corporation. These arrangements were previously not subject to T3 filing requirements. Now that they are, these arrangements need to be reviewed to determine whether a T3 Return is required or an exemption applies. Penalties for non-compliance can reach $2,500 per year and they add up quickly if multiple years go unreported. If any of this sounds familiar, it's worth a conversation before the deadline arrives. Most business owners don't realize their financial statements are costing them money until they're sitting across the table from a lender, investor, or buyer. Messy, inconsistent financials create uncertainty at the moments when speed and confidence matter most: • Financing approvals • Business valuations • Due diligence during a sale • Investor negotiations When your numbers raise questions, lenders and buyers often respond by pricing in risk. That can mean higher interest rates, lower valuations, additional due diligence, and longer closing timelines. For real estate developers, the stakes are even higher. Project-based accounting requires a clear picture of project costs, construction draws, timing, and profitability. Well-organized financial statements can make the difference between a smooth financing process and costly delays. Clean financial statements are a strategic asset. They build credibility, strengthen your negotiating position, and help you access capital with greater confidence. At Clearline CPA, we help business owners and developers build financial foundations that support growth. If you're planning to finance your next project, attract investors, or prepare for a future sale, let's talk. https://ow.ly/u7pn50Zlem2

One of the most common questions we hear from incorporated business owners is: "How do I protect my wealth for future generations?" A holding company often plays a key role in answering that. A holdco is a crucial foundation for intergenerational planning. Strategies like an estate freeze can lock in your company’s current value for tax purposes, allowing you to transfer future growth to the next generation while managing tax liabilities. Using multiple wills can reduce probate exposure on private company shares. Additionally, life insurance held within a holdco can facilitate a tax-efficient wealth transfer via the capital dividend account. Recent changes to rules for intergenerational business transfers have introduced new planning opportunities, and new complexities. The earlier you start, the more options you have. We had a fantastic day out at the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament, hosted this year at the beautiful Green-Tee Golf Course. This years theme brought a fun Honky-Tonk, all things Country vibe to the event! The $25,000 hole-in-one prize was once again up for grabs - but it remains unclaimed. At this point, it almost feels like a friendly curse! Despite that, everyone enjoyed great games of horseshoes and sippin' on Southern Sparklers. More importantly, it was a strong day for the Tri-Cities business community. Great course, perfect weather, and plenty of great conversation with the local business owners and operators who make this region thrive. A big thank you to everyone who joined us as well as the organizers and sponsors who put together another seamless event. We'll keep coming back - because eventually, someone is going to walk away $25K richer. Connect with the Clearline CPA team to keep the conversation going.

Walking into a commercial financing conversation unprepared is one of the more costly mistakes a business owner can make. Lenders aren't just looking at your revenue. They're assessing the full picture; consistency of earnings, quality of receivables, debt serviceability, and whether management can clearly articulate the path ahead. Your financial statements are usually the first thing on the table. They need to tell a credible story. The businesses that tend to secure the best terms aren't necessarily the most profitable ones. They're the ones that have been maintaining clean, current, well-organized financials year-round, long before a lender ever asked for them. If commercial financing is on your radar, whether for an acquisition, real estate, equipment, or working capital, the time to prepare is well before the conversation with your lender begins. The Clearline team works regularly with business owners navigating commercial financing. Let's make sure your financials are positioned to work for you when it counts. #CommercialLending #BusinessFinancing #WorkingCapital #OwnerManagedBusiness #CPA #Vancouver #Clearline #BusinessGrowth

Clearline is proud to be sponsoring the Longest Drive contest at the Lending a Hand Golf Tournament today June 23rd, and we're genuinely glad to be part of something that goes well beyond the fairway. Lending a Hand Society was founded by the directors of PHL Capital Corp. with a clear purpose: sustained, meaningful giving to charities that support at-risk children and youth. This year's tournament benefits the Canucks Autism Network, an organization doing important work for families across BC. There's something fitting about a community of business owners, lenders, and advisors coming together not just to network, but to contribute to something larger than the day itself. That combination doesn't happen by accident, it takes organizers who are genuinely committed to making it matter. Thank you to PHL Capital Corp. and the tournament organizers for building this event year after year, and for creating space for the business community to show up in a meaningful way. We'll see you on the course. #LendingAHand #CanucksAutismNetwork #CommunityGiving #Vancouver #Clearline #GolfTournament #GivingBack

Most business owners encounter audit and review engagements for the first time as a requirement; a lender condition, an investor ask, or a covenant buried in a shareholder agreement. But there's more to these engagements than the compliance checkbox. Reviewed or audited financial statements carry a level of credibility that internally prepared financials simply can't match. For businesses pursuing financing, bringing on investors, or working through an ownership transition, that credibility reduces friction and signals that the business operates with discipline and transparency. It's also worth understanding the distinction between the two: A review engagement provides limited assurance and is appropriate for many private companies. An audit provides a higher level of assurance and is required in specific circumstances or simply warranted given the complexity of the business or the expectations of stakeholders. Knowing which one you need, and why, is the right place to start. If your business is approaching a stage where an assurance engagement may be required or beneficial, connect with the Clearline team, we'll help you understand your options and what makes sense for where you're headed. #Audit #ReviewEngagement #AssuranceServices #PrivateCompany #BusinessFinance #Vancouver #CPA #Clearline

The sun was out, the course was in great shape, and the $25,000 hole-in-one prize went unclaimed... again. We were proud to be part of the Surrey and White Rock Board of Trade Fun in the Sun Golf Tournament this year, and as always, the day delivered. Great golf, great conversations, and a reminder of just how strong the Surrey business community really is. To every business owner, sponsor, and participant who came out, thank you. Events like this are built by the people who show up. For those keeping track: we'll be back with another $25,000 hole-in-one opportunity at the BBOT and Tri-City Chamber golf tournaments. There's still time to practise. The Clearline team looks forward to seeing everyone out there again soon.
