Mega boost for manufacturing. The National Science Foundation just named Northeast Ohio one of the nation’s Innovation engines, positioning the region to receive as much as $160 million to boost advanced manufacturing. “Led by Case Western Reserve University, the Northeast Ohio coalition brings together more than 70 partners from private industry, higher education, philanthropy, and state and local governments.” Leading that coalition is our own Nick Barendt ‘95, MS ‘98, adjunct instructor in the Case School of Engineering https://lnkd.in/gH6vGbPN

We're so glad to hear you've had an incredible experience so far!
At 18, I'd never lived outside of the United States. Two weeks ago, that changed. Two weeks ago, I started the Global Startup Experience under CWRU Veale Institute for Entrepreneurship in Taiwan. My first time studying abroad, my first time in Asia, and my first time in a startup outside the U.S. At 18 years old it is safe to say that this has been the most eye-opening and impactful program of my life. In this short time I've learned so many interesting things; fundamental theories of Quantitative finance, the pros and cons of an export-oriented economy, and Taiwan's specialization over the semiconductor industry. During my time here, I've been partnered with ComicRay, a startup mentored through Garage NTHU, assisting in website optimization and supporting software development alongside founders Ark Yeh and Wendy Chen. Alongside work and studies, I've grown accustomed to life as a Taiwanese college student: - Dorming in National Tsing Hua University's Cheng and Yi dorms - Getting to know NTHU students, faculty and founders (陳詩瀅 Celine Chen, Shih Ying Chen and friends, Daniel Ieong, Nathanael Jason Nababan, Fransiskus Guntur, Dr. CT Lin, 戴翔, etc.) - Working out of the Garage NTHU office, watching startups pitch and get mentored(e.g. Longlink Solutions Co., Ltd, Cultivator, winner of Hult Prize Taiwan) - and explored well beyond the classroom alongside my Global Startup peers Ana Izma and Binayek Tiwari; travelling to Ningxuan and Raohe night markets, Jiufen, Elephant Mountain, Taipei 101, Longshan Temple, Old Dihua street, Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, Beitou's hot springs, Shifen, Taichung's shopping squares, etc. I'd especially like to thank the people who made this opportunity so warm and welcoming: QF Professor and NTHU Garage CEO Sean Han, for making every day of this program better. 陳詩瀅 Celine Chen, Shih Ying Chen, for being an incredible friend and guide around Hsinchu and Taichung. Yumeco Yuan, for an unforgettable experience in Taipei and TASA alongside Ministry of Education, ROC (Taiwan) Huaya BEST Scholarship, NTHU IBP, and other international students. Elizabeth Miller (叶米兰), Natalie Feng L. as support from the Case Alumni Association. Wayne Liu, for being the bridge between Case Western Reserve University and Taiwan's startup ecosystem. And my Veale Institute family; Michael Goldberg, Stacey Lotz, and Mindy Baierl, for giving me the honor of undergoing this opportunity. In two weeks I've traveled half of Taiwan, met students, founders, and professors, helped build a startup, and moved my life across the world. And this is just week two. drop a follow to see whats next! If you've spent time in Taiwan or worked in its startup scene, I'd love to connect and hear your story. Professor Adel “Tony” Saada taught at Case for 60 years before his death in 2025. Now there is a place to sit and ponder his legacy. On Friday, leaders of the Case School of Engineering, joined by Saada’s children, dedicated a bench in his honor in front of the Bingham Building, the longtime home of his beloved Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Standing above Christiane and Richard Saada are, from left, interim Dean Chris Zorman, department chair Bill Yu and incoming Dean Susan Hagness.

We're excited to follow along as these students (two of which are our engineering students) explore the month-long Global Startup Experience in Taiwan!
Our first view from the Global Startup Experience trip to Taiwan! Ana Izma, Binayek Tiwari and Hadrian Polanco recently landed in Taiwan for a month-long Program that offers Engineering and Arts & Sciences majors from CWRU an immersive experience in an entrepreneurial ecosystem outside the US. Hosted by National Tsing Hua University and in collaboration with Wayne Liu (MS ’94, PhD) and Sean Han, this program aims to shape the next generation of global business leaders. Today, our students joined Chinese-language learning students on a trip to Taiwan Space Agency-TASA to learn more about Taiwan's emerging space sector and innovation capabilities. Formerly the National Space Organization (formed in 1991), TASA hosts numerous divisions and laboratories leading the development of space science, technology and industry in Taiwan. Looking forward to what else our students explore and learn about! Bravo, Baja! More than 100 schools competed at the Baja SAE competition in Palmyra, New York, June 11-14. CWRU Motorsports came out on top. Case’s Baja team, which is supported by the Case Alumni Foundation, attained first place overall at a competition that included a four-hour endurance race with jumps, hills and rock crawls. “It feels truly unbelievable,” said fourth-year team captain Brendan Flanagan, a mechanical engineering major. He believes CWRU Motorsports won only one other competition, Baja SAE Ohio in 2023. “Everyone on this team works so insanely hard to build an amazing car,” he said, “and getting to see all of the late nights and hard work pay off at my final competition was really special.”

James M. Galm '84, MS'87, PhD' 91—a three-time graduate of Case Western Reserve University and co-founder of LayerZero Power Systems, a global provider of power infrastructure products for data centers and other mission-critical industries—has committed $10 million to strengthen his alma mater’s leadership in energy and electrochemistry research, education and innovation. The gift will support Case Western Reserve University’s Case School of Engineering and its new Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building (ISEB) through the creation of two endowed faculty positions and a new research laboratory focused on high-performance electrochemical energy technologies.
