US Biochar is exploding - we look forward to being part of that 819,000 metric tons! We are proud to be part of this critical growth that is using waste to create a climate benefit. Check out American Biochar Institute's latest report.
❗ Biochar production in the United States increased from nearly 87 thousand metric tonnes in 2023 to over 151 thousand metric tonnes in 2025, based on the 2025 United States Biochar Market Report. That's impressive for a two year window. For a sense of scale, the produced amount of biochar was about 8.3 million 40-pound bags. That's enough material to apply 5 tons per acre across roughly 30,000 acres if we were to consider just agricultural use… but at this point, other end-use markets, including stormwater management and construction, are catching up fast! Survey respondents also said production could exceed 819 thousand metric tonnes annually by 2027 — over 5 times the 2025 estimate. 👀 Based on our calculations that might be slightly out of reach in such a short timeframe (but we hope to be proven wrong!). Carba is honored to be part of the Terraset portfolio. Last year, Terraset launched the first revolving fund dedicated to greenhouse gas removal and abatement. The idea is simple: purchase credits from early-stage projects, resell them, and recycle the proceeds. Here's what year one looked like: 1. We deployed ~$1.1M across 11 early-stage companies. 2. Our purchases improved financial returns by 2.2 to 3.6 percentage points, moving projects closer to the threshold where commercial capital takes over. 3. For each dollar deployed, portfolio companies attracted $6.50 to $7.10 in additional capital. Collectively, they raised over $114M in third-party equity, grants, and offtake agreements within 12 months. The headline is that the model is working. Our revolving fund enters year two with recycled capital and a clearer picture of which levers we can and should pull to maximize our impact. Our first report on year one is out. Congratulations to University of Minnesota Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Professor Paul Dauenhauer who was honored as the “Faculty Innovator of the Year” at the 2026 University of Minnesota Founder’s Day! Dauenhauer has developed an entirely new class of surfactants — chemical compounds that enable cleaning agents to mix with water. These compounds, which help cleaning agents mix with water, could replace the oil-based versions found in many products like detergents, soaps, and personal care items. He also is the co-founder of four start-up companies: Låkril Technologies, Sironix Renewables, Carba and Activated Research Company.
