For the last two years I've been teaching an online course about birding and data visualization. It's a course about noticing. About learning to be critical about data. About incubating and encouraging environmental care. It's a reminder that we can make things with code and technology that are grounded in the real world. That the web can be a place for *us* to make things for each other and for our communities. Also, it's really fun? Birds are amazing! Spring courses start in March. Somehow, I went from “who’d listen to this?” to speaking at CanUX in Ottawa,Canada. What started as a random thought about enterprise design “Hmm… I wonder who would actually want to hear this?” Somehow turned into me speaking at CanUX, thanks to Cornelius Rachieru, who said yes. And just like that, a small idea became my most unexpected adventure yet. I didn’t know what to expect, but I’ve always liked trying things I’ve never done before. It was an honor to meet and share stage with so many world-class UX minds - Carol J. Smith, Levi Myers, Scott Berkun, Kate Tarling, Patricia Nadeau MSc., Shreya Dhawan, Alasdair Stuart-Bell, Alëna Iouguina, Sarika Goel,Ayomide 'Aday' Sami-Orungbe,Helelyn Tammsaar,Jer Thorp, and Meena Kothandaraman - their brilliance need no introduction. Honestly, I kept thinking, “Who let me in?” 😅 But the real magic happened offstage: 💬 Warm encouragement from Carol and Meena after my talk (and during the speaker dinner) 🍽 A great conversation during lunch with Levi 🚶♀️ Wandering Ottawa’s streets at night laughing with Aday and Sarika ☕️ A breakfast that turned into a surprise service-design lesson from Kate and Shreya It was more than I ever expected - in the best way. To everyone who came up afterward and said my talk resonated - thank you. That meant the world. My original goal for this talk was simple: To make enterprise design fun again, share a laugh, and maybe audience can take away a thought or two.
