SecKC's July meetup is set for Tuesday, July 14, 5 to 9 PM at Knuckleheads Garage in Kansas City! Speakers Bryson 🦄 Bort and John Tuckner will cover two timely topics: cutting through AI vendor FUD and dissecting how browser extension malware operates in the wild. This is a great opportunity for security professionals in the Kansas City area to connect, learn, and get involved with the local community. Event details: https://lnkd.in/erEDrNcV Thanks to Infoblox and Torq for sponsoring this month!

TLDR: The SecKC community is raising $6k for Hope House (a local domestic violence nonprofit) and a beloved member has put his rear end on the line to make it happen. Donate at orders.seckc.org and vote which cheek gets the archaic meme tattoo, live on Twitch, at our June 9th meeting. 🙂 I don't post often. Thought I'd wait for an absolutely ridiculous post to share some thoughts on how the cybersecurity community never ceases to impress me. I’ve been helping run SecKC since COVID, and our June 9th meeting is going to be wild: 7 simultaneous speakers & live tattoos. The CDC reports 1 in 3 women & 1 in 6 men experience domestic violence in their lifetime. Within our own haKCer community, there are people who have lived those statistics. Hope House exists to support survivors, and it's a cause that is deeply personal to me. So when the opportunity came up to raise real money for them, through something completely unhinged, the SecKC community didn't hesitate. It started with my offer to donate $100 toward a tattoo if someone got a tramp stamp. Longtime member @sysaaron DM'd me saying he'd do it if we raised $1k for charity. We hit that in a week. So he raised the stakes, $5k more and he'll get an archaic meme tattoo on his rear end, live on stage via Twitch at our June 9th meeting. Your donation is your vote, left or right cheek. We're currently at $2,225.27 of that additional $5k. For some, this is about the laughs. For others, it's about showing up for people in our community who need it most. Even at our most irreverent, we are deeply invested in the safety of those around us. Every dollar goes to Hope House, big check and everything! The guy getting a ridiculous tattoo on stage is just what happens when we get there. Donate at orders.seckc.org

The SecKC community is raising funds for Hope House ahead of our SecKC Tattoo LIVE event this June. Anyone can contribute at any amount, and a limited number of twenty dollar reservation slots remain for your own live tattoo at the event. Proceeds go to Hope House. If you want to support the cause and rally with the SecKC community, donate or reserve a tattoo slot at the link below. https://orders.seckc.org/

It is a crazy weekend in our house but that doesn't stop the #unpopularopinion: People sleep on smaller regional security #conferences because they don’t come with RSAC or Black Hat price tags. That is a mistake. BSides. GrrCON. CornCon. CactusCon. RejectionCon. ThotCon. WWHF. Pick your flavor...or pick a few! A lot of these conferences have the same caliber of speakers...and often the very same speakers... you’ll find on the big stages, but without the airport terminal craziness, the uber sticker shock, the badge-scanning arms race, and the feeling that you’re one face in a crowd of 40,000 people. At a regional con, you are not buried in a convention center trying to sprint between vendor booths and sponsored keynotes. You are in rooms where you can actually talk to the speaker afterward. You can ask the weird question. You can meet practitioners who are still close to the work. You can build real relationships instead of collecting LinkedIn connections you’ll never talk to again. The big conferences have their place. No question. But if you think value only shows up when the badge costs more than a mortgage payment, you’re missing where a lot of the real community, real learning, and real access actually happens. BL: Sometimes the best conference isn’t the one with the biggest logo. Sometimes it’s the one where you can actually have a conversation. #unpopularopinionguy PS..See you Tuesday at BSidesNOLA!
