💜 What role will non-school alternative provision play in the future of SEND? With the recent SEND reform proposals and the introduction of the new voluntary national standards for non-school alternative provision, I've found myself reflecting on where services like ours fit within the wider system. For many children experiencing EBSA, the journey back into education isn't always straightforward. Sometimes a mainstream classroom is the right place. Sometimes specialist provision is the right place. And sometimes children need something in between. A bridge. A safe space to rebuild confidence, reconnect with learning, and take small steps forward. For years, non-school alternative provision has often been viewed as the "other" option. Yet some of the most powerful stories I've witnessed have come from children who simply needed an approach that looked different from traditional education. As the SEND landscape continues to evolve, my hope is that we move away from thinking about provision as either/or. Mainstream or specialist School or alternative provision. Instead, perhaps we should be asking a different question: What does this child need right now to feel safe enough to learn?
