Over the past 13 years, I’ve said “yes” to serving as a mentor at the Charlotte Business Journal #MentoringMonday event whenever possible because I know firsthand how powerful mentoring can be. My 35-year public relations career has been shaped by incredible mentors, many of them women, who shared their experience, encouraged me to take risks and helped me see the long game. They answered questions, opened doors and shared hard-earned lessons. A heartfelt thank you to some of my favorite female mentors of all time: Dianne Bach Carol Schumacher Bonnie Ulman Miller Robyn Freedman Marilynn Bowler Moira Quinn and of course, my mom. 💙 One of the biggest misconceptions about mentoring? As the owner of a bear-themed Airbnb in the NC Mountains, the new Starbucks “Bearista” Cold Cup, that dropped last week, spoke to iced-coffee lovin’ me and captured my PR heart. A simple glass bear in a green beanie. Playful, perfectly on-brand, no big campaign or complex rollout. The result: Same-day sell out sparking conversation (some say frenzy) and an apology from the company for demand exceeding expectations. This is a great reminder that sometimes the simplest ideas have the biggest impact. Who has one? As a wordie and PR professional, this was news to me! This NPR story explains why the number “67” is Dictionary.com’s 2025 Word of the Year, what it means, how to pronounce it, and who coined the term. According to the story: “Dictionary.com says searches for 67 surged over the summer, increasing "more than sixfold" since June with no signs of stopping.
