You are right where you need to be. In 2019, I somewhat uncertainly joined Aurum Cosmetics (UC Berkeley), not knowing that one decision would lead me to a club field trip to Beautylish HQ in San Francisco. That visit inspired me to start my own science-backed makeup brand, BiotechBeauty®, in 2023. In 2025, I met with Nils Johnson, CEO of Beautylish, in Chicago as my mentor through the Ulta Beauty MUSE Accelerator. And now, 7 years later, BiotechBeauty is available on Beautylish. All the pieces really do fall into place! 🌱 https://lnkd.in/gSTMDcTi #beauty #beautyfounder #beautyretail #beautylish #biotechbeauty #founder

  • 🧪 Most makeup products are judged by how they look on the skin. Far fewer are evaluated for how they affect the skin itself. The skin barrier plays a central role in maintaining hydration and protecting against environmental stressors. When it becomes compromised, concerns like irritation, redness, and breakouts can follow. Despite its importance, barrier function is not always a primary focus in cosmetic product evaluation. At BiotechBeauty, barrier support is one of the factors we examine during clinical testing. Our studies assess how formulas interact with the skin over time, including changes related to skin barrier function and overall skin clarity.🔬 This reflects a broader shift happening in beauty. Makeup and skincare are no longer separate conversations. Consumers increasingly expect products that not only perform visually, but also support long-term skin health. 🧬 #BiotechBeauty #SkinBarrier #ClinicalTesting #BeautyScience

  • Many beauty products claim to be dermatologist tested. 🧬 But that phrase can mean different things. In many cases, it means a dermatologist reviewed the formula for safety. That’s very different from clinical testing. Clinical testing typically involves structured studies conducted by independent laboratories to evaluate how a finished product performs on the skin over time. 🔬 For consumers with acne-prone or sensitive skin, that distinction matters. At BiotechBeauty, our formulas undergo third-party clinical testing to evaluate how the finished product interacts with real skin over time. In addition to standard safety assessments, our studies examine factors such as comedogenicity, skin barrier function, and the skin microbiome. Because long-wear makeup doesn’t just sit on the skin — it interacts with it throughout the day. Understanding that interaction is an important part of developing products that support skin health. #BiotechBeauty #SkinBarrier #ClinicalTesting #BeautyScience #Microbiome #SensitiveSkin

During the Ulta Beauty MUSE Accelerator, I was asked about the hardest part of building BiotechBeauty®. This was my honest answer: Imposter syndrome hasn’t disappeared for me. I’ve just built evidence louder than the doubt. As a bootstrapped, solo founder building clinically tested makeup from the ground up, there have been late nights, real risk, and moments of questioning. What steadies me is remembering the work that brought me here, and staying intentional about gratitude for the opportunities ahead. The Ulta Beauty MUSE Accelerator created space to refine, grow, and be challenged alongside other founders building boldly. 🧡 Milestones that once felt far away—clinical validation and nationwide retail with Credo Beauty—are now part of our foundation. If you’re building something, trust that the version of you who started would be proud of how far you’ve already come. ✨ #FounderJourney #CleanBeauty #BeautyEntrepreneurship

I’m still processing the fact that I just completed the Ulta Beauty MUSE Accelerator as the founder of a brand that started as an idea in my lab. To have BiotechBeauty® recognized by a program this thoughtful means more than I can put into words. Over the last 11 weeks, MUSE pushed me in the best ways possible. From retail readiness curriculum to pitch prep to presenting at Ulta’s headquarters, this program stretched every part of me as a founder, scientist, and storyteller. It reminded me that building a beauty brand isn’t just about products: it’s about people, purpose, and the responsibility we have to move the industry forward with intention. As someone building a clinically backed, skin-healing makeup brand, being surrounded by mentors, retailers, investors, and a cohort that truly gets it—the highs, the fears, the grit—was transformative. I entered this program as a solo founder and emerged with lifelong friendships, collaborators, and a community I know I can lean on in the journey ahead. ❤️ I am endlessly grateful to the entire Ulta Beauty MUSE team (Monique, Carol, Jessica, Muffy) for investing in founders and giving us access, education, and support that genuinely amplifies the trajectory of our businesses and lives. 💕 Thank you to every merchant and brand mentor (Stephanie, Nils, Kevin) and to my incredible cohort—the most brilliant, generous, inspiring group of women—for making this journey so meaningful. Feeling humbled, energized, and more committed than ever to continuing the work we’re doing at BiotechBeauty: building clinically validated makeup that supports skin health, honors diverse skin needs, and makes the industry safer, smarter, and more inclusive. 🧬 Stay tuned for what’s next! ✨ Heather Chan Smitha Rao Necole Kane Ma-Shyrra Durden, LSSBB Yrenes Martinez Dr. Felice Chan Dawn Myers Irene Ham Carolina Lopez

Misconceptions around “natural” and “lab-made” ingredients continue to shape the beauty landscape. At BiotechBeauty®, we believe in clarity, transparency, and science-backed education. Here are a few common myths, and the facts behind them. ✨ Myth 1: “Natural” Ingredients Are Always Better 🔬 Fact: “Natural” does not inherently mean safer, more effective, or more sustainable. Naturally sourced ingredients can vary widely in purity, potency, and stability, leading to inconsistent results and potential skin irritation. Our biotech-derived ingredients are nature-inspired and produced through controlled, sustainable processes that ensure high purity, reliability, and performance... without relying on overharvested natural resources. ✨ Myth 2: Biotech Ingredients Aren’t Natural 🔬 Fact: Biotechnology builds on nature rather than replacing it. Through methods like fermentation and bio-culturing, biotech allows us to create ingredients that are chemically identical to those found in nature, but refined for consistency, safety, and scalability. It’s nature’s design, enhanced through scientific precision. ✨ Myth 3: Lab-Created Ingredients Are Less Safe or Less Pure 🔬 Fact: Lab refinement often results in ingredients that are purer, more consistent, and more predictable than naturally extracted counterparts. By controlling molecular composition and removing impurities, biotechnology produces ingredients that are both effective and skin-compatible. ✨ Myth 4: Natural Products Are Always More Gentle 🔬 Fact: Gentleness depends on formulation, not origin. Biotech ingredients can often be more skin-friendly, as they’re engineered with stable concentrations and fewer irritants, providing targeted benefits with minimized sensitivity. At BiotechBeauty®, our approach is not about choosing between “natural” and “lab-made.” It’s about integrating the intelligence of nature with the rigor of science to develop products that are effective, sustainable, and rooted in innovation. Myth-busting is more fun with friends! Tag someone who needs a little skincare science today. #BiotechBeauty #ScienceBacked #SkincareScience #MythVsFact #Biotechnology #CleanBeauty #ScienceBackedSkincare #BeautyInnovation
