Free, comprehensive and independent access to Australasian law
About us
The Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII) is Australia's most popular online free-access resource for Australian legal information, serving the needs of a multitude of users with over 600,000 hits daily. AustLII is a joint facility of the UTS and UNSW Faculties of Law. AustLII relies on the generosity of its contributors to operate. AustLII provides free internet access to Australasian legal materials. AustLII's broad public policy agenda is to improve access to justice through better access to information. To that end, we have become one of the largest sources of legal materials on the net, with over four million searchable documents. AustLII publishes public legal information -- that is, primary legal materials (legislation, treaties and decisions of courts and tribunals); and secondary legal materials created by public bodies for purposes of public access (law reform and royal commission reports for example) and a substantial collection of law journals.

On 20 August AustLII celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special event bringing together distinguished guests from the judiciary, government, legal profession, academia, and the wider community. https://lnkd.in/gru-9RUu We were delighted to welcome our Guests of Honour - the Chief Justice of Australia, the Honourable Stephen Gageler AC, and the Attorney-General of Australia, the Honourable Michelle Rowland MP, who shared insightful reflections on AustLII’s journey and its enduring contribution to free access to law. For three decades, AustLII has been dedicated to making the law freely available, supporting access to justice and the rule of law across Australasia and beyond. Looking ahead, AustLII is building on this solid foundation through new technological developments, including the use of AI and large language models, to make legal information more accessible, usable, and relevant. These developments will improve how users find and engage with the law, providing more intuitive access to legal resources. The 30th anniversary represents both a significant milestone and the start of a new chapter in AustLII's ongoing work.
