A padel court in a busy city opens up for 30 minutes. Sometime tonight, 8:15 to 8:45. If your booking app takes 4 seconds to load, that court is gone before your user finishes tapping. That was the problem Project Play brought to us. They were building a real-time court booking platform for padel and pickleball players the kind of app where every second between "I want to play" and "I've booked it" costs you a customer. We rebuilt the platform end to end. Load time dropped from 4.2 seconds to 1.8 seconds. Overall performance improved by 59%. And in the months after launch, bookings went up by 53%. We also shipped two features the team had been wanting for a while a Play Coins rewards engine that keeps players coming back, and a dynamic pricing system that adjusts to peak demand without anyone having to touch a spreadsheet. The lesson we've taken into every booking and marketplace build since: In real-time products, speed isn't a feature. It's the product. We built a HIPAA-compliant therapist matching platform. The hardest part wasn't the matching engine. It was the compliance architecture. When we started on BlackTherapy a platform helping Black clients find culturally competent therapists the challenge landed on our lead engineer's whiteboard like this: "How do we match thousands of people to therapists in under two minutes, without logging a single piece of protected health information?"
