Augustus raised a $180M Series B at a $1B valuation to accelerate our mission to dollarize the world — giving financial institutions around the world direct, programmable access to dollar accounts and rails. This round was led by Tiger Global, with participation from QED Investors, Hummingbird Ventures, existing investors, the founders of Ramp, Deel, Nubank, Circle, and many more. Two months ago, we secured conditional OCC approval for a national bank charter. Now, we have the funding to match the vision: building the Global Dollar Bank. One of the interesting trends in crypto is the “race to the middle”. Everyone wants to become the super app. Crypto businesses are launching stock trading, futures (-> ninjatraders!) and banking products. Maybe, the next 5 years of crypto look just like traditional fintech, but built on better infrastructure. Companies like Kraken show how that can look: A portfolio of all the main financial service products, both crypto and fiat, but built on infrastructure that is 24/7/365, at the speed of compute. Legacy banking infrastructure wasn’t built for that reality. It settles in batches, is closed on the weekend and after 5pm. In our latest conversation with Kaushik Sthankiya, Director of Bank Partnerships at Kraken, we discussed the growing gap between legacy banking infrastructure and the demands of global FIs.
