🚀 The Department for Culture, Media and Sport said #TurnItUp so thats exactly what I plan to do with #PHARE!! My team and I are delighted and honoured to have been named by Lisa Nandy MP as an example of the kinds of initiatives that the #DCMS intend to back from the £45 million fund they plan to deploy to 2000 music projects over the coming 3 years. 🔥 🎹 Born out of a vision to support young musicians embarking on education and / or careers in #music, me and my team #FutureWorldDesign team at BBC R&D established PHARE as an initiative to build a smoother on-ramp to the industry. We’ve been ecstatic about how the initiative has been received so far, and we’re keen to get our pilot up and running over the coming year. 👊 We hope to reach and help some of the most talented young musicians in the UK through partners including Trinity Laban, Royal Northern College of Music, and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and offer them tools and services to create and protect their music, thanks to our technology and creative services partners, including Audiotool, TrueRights, and TYXstudios. 100 builders. One weekend. Berklee College of Music, Boston. This is what came out of it. Musicians, producers and engineers — most of whom had never met — sat down on Friday and shipped working music + AI products by Sunday. Built with Ableton, Google DeepMind, Stability AI, Audiotool, Muse Group's Muse Hub and Suno. Judged by people who actually build this industry. Some came to learn. They left with collaborators, mentors, and conversations that don't happen anywhere else. That's the point — a weekend in this room opens doors a year of cold applications doesn't. I've sat through a hundred pitch decks about the future of music. None of them beats what a 48 hours hackathon does. This weekend I led a hackathon — 100 musicians, producers and engineers, one room, a weekend to build something real with tools like Ableton, Muse Group, Google DeepMind's Magenta, Suno, Stability AI and Audiotool. No slides, no roadmaps. Just working things presented in 3 minutes. Products that didn't exist on Friday and were live by Sunday. The startup community is drowning in decks and starving for demos. There are no-one better qualified for funding, in my book, than the passionate participants who chose to spend a weekend working with strangers for no greater rewards than a learning experience and the joy of building something. The people who'll define the next decade of music aren't pitching it. They're already building it — and shipping by Sunday night.    We're planning the next one, and we will invest in those projects before anyone else does. Last week I had the pleasure of attending both the Berklee AIMS: AI Music Summit as well as the Music Hackspace + Berklee College of Music hackathon in Boston! Berklee AIMS: AI Music Summit featured insightful sessions on the cutting edge of music technology. I learned more about applications of machine learning in audio technology and attended fascinating sessions on the philosophy and legal dimensions of music technology. I also met many great people in the field. Thank you, Jonathan Wyner and Mark Ethier, for this opportunity. During the hackathon, I worked with Rukmini Menon, Gauri Prabhakar, and Alexander Gentil on a concept called Magic Deck. We used Audiotool's Nexus SDK and Google DeepMind's Magenta Realtime 2 API to develop standalone DJ software centered on a deck that can host a 16-bar loop generated through the Magenta API. As a DJ/producer on the side, I can see myself using a tool like this, and we were excited to receive positive feedback from mentors and other attendees. Stay tuned for future updates! Overall, I met many great people over four days and was able to immerse myself in the world of music technology, an area that continues to inspire me.
