  • Something is shifting in presbyopia-correcting IOLs. For a long time, the questions around these lenses have been variations on the same theme. How much range? How much compromise? How well do patients adapt? The options have improved, but the tradeoffs have remained part of the conversation. An IOL that doesn't rely on light splitting to achieve range of vision represents a fundamentally different approach. Three years of first-in-human data gives surgeons and the broader ophthalmic community a concrete reason to pay attention to what that difference might mean. The question is no longer whether a non-light-splitting approach is theoretically possible. It is whether the field is ready to move toward it.   • Cataract surgery is one of the most successful elective procedures in medicine. And yet, for a meaningful number of patients, a secondary procedure becomes part of their long-term journey. Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is one of the most common long-term sequelae following cataract surgery. It occurs when lens epithelial cells migrate across the posterior capsule after IOL implantation, causing progressive visual haze. For many patients, a secondary YAG laser capsulotomy becomes necessary months or years after their original procedure. What drives PCO formation -- and whether lens design plays a meaningful role in its development -- remains an active area of scientific interest. How a lens interacts with the capsular bag, including whether it fills, compresses, or allows the bag to fibrose over time, is one factor researchers continue to explore. Instead of redistributing light to achieve range, the investigational OmniVu Modular Shape-Changing IOL is designed to engage the eye's natural focusing mechanism.   • It took bold thinking to change cataract surgery once before. In 1949, Sir Harold Ridley implanted the world's first intraocular lens -- a move so radical at the time that many considered it malpractice. But that willingness to challenge the conventional became the foundation of modern cataract surgery as we know it today. In the decades since, the field has made remarkable strides: ✅ Monofocal IOLs restored distance vision for millions ✅ Multifocal and trifocal designs delivered improved near and intermediate vision ✅ EDOF lenses achieved more continuous range of vision Each generation revealed something new about what patients need and what remains worth pursuing.
