I’m proud to be part of the founding board of #Afrokwary as we officially introduce our vision. 🌍🚀🚀🚀🚀 Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of solving local challenges, building companies, driving innovation, and contributing to the deployment of emerging technologies across Africa. As an engineer, one thing has become increasingly clear to me: meaningful innovation begins with research. Whether it takes place in universities, research institutes, industry, startups, or independent labs, research is the foundation upon which we build solutions that shape the future. One year ago, we soft launched #Afrokwary with a clear purpose: to elevate African research and innovation, amplify African voices in science and technology, and create a space where ideas and discoveries from the continent receive the visibility they deserve. We intentionally took our time to refine our vision, grow our community, and lay strong foundations. Today, we’re proud to officially introduce Afrokwary and invite more minds to join us. Afrokwary was created to challenge misconceptions about Africa’s role in scientific advancement. We believe the continent is not only a place where innovation is applied, but also where knowledge is produced, breakthroughs are made, and solutions are developed for Africa and the world. Our mission is to advance research and development, promote responsible innovation, highlight African excellence in engineering and science, and contribute to conversations that will shape the future. A powerful moment for Africa’s AI future at yesterday’s AI roundtable with President Emmanuel Macron 🇫🇷 and President William Ruto 🇰🇪, where our CEO Kate Kallot joined selected leaders shaping the future of AI and digital sovereignty in Africa. Kate shared a bold vision: Africa must move from being consumers of AI to becoming builders of AI infrastructure, intelligence, and innovation. Key messages from her speech: ✅Africa cannot remain at the bottom of the AI value chain, only labeling data while others own the systems. ✅The future of AI sovereignty requires local infrastructure that African governments and companies can own and operate. ✅Local data must be transformed into intelligence that the continent can act upon. ✅The decisions and collaborations made today will define what sovereignty means for generations to come. 🔔🔔Yesterday also marked an important milestone for us at Amini as we announced our partnership with Foxconn and Bull to help close Africa’s sovereign compute gap through modular and energy-efficient compute infrastructure. I took time to write on the journey that has span over 5 years to bring us to the point of the launch of the Ghana National AI Strategy last month. I felt the need to also offer some clarifications to those who needed to fully comprehend the drafting process especially because of the confusion of having a draft already existing online prior to the launch. Africa's research output in Artificial Intelligence is relatively low and requires strategic public investment. Between 2014-2023, African researchers published almost 20,000 papers on topics related to AI. However, five countries contributed close to 90% of the total output. The top five countries by volume are: Egypt: 4,316 Tunisia: 3,930 Algeria: 3,132 Morocco: 3,046 South Africa: 2,677 The top 10 leading research topics are: 1 Feature Selection 2 Fuzzy Sets 3 Clustering 4 Intrusion Detection 5 Association Rules 6 Bayesian Networks 7 Rough Sets 8 Load Forecasting 9 Credit Scoring 10 Case-Based Reasoning Generally, Africa's computer science research output is very low compared to other disciplines like health sciences, which leads the rank.
