Highlights from Seattle Software Factory Intensive: The Software Factory Intensive training in Seattle this week, hosted by Actual AI and AI Tinkerers, provided an incredible glimpse of the future. One day soon, every organization that builds software products will need a software factory. Humans won't write software. We'll build the factories where our agents write software. Meanwhile, creating software products has never been easier, cheaper, or more accessible. Software factories will not only transform product development in software companies and organizations large enough to have teams of in-house coders. They will make more sophisticated processes accessible to the small and medium sized businesses that can all-of-the-sudden create websites and apps that would have been unaffordable previously (doctors offices, construction companies, schools, towns, etc.). Here's are some highlights & takeaways: * Today's factories are bespoke, but productized factories are coming fast. They'll be built with proprietary platforms like Anthropic's Managed Agents and open source frameworks like Gas City. Actual AI’s trainers gave trainees a Claude skill that installed a ready-to-operate Gas City factory in seconds. I gave it a project, left it—and the six agents it created on my laptop—running all night. When I woke up, the project was done. I had a new design system! * Software engineers are talking a lot about “dark factories,” a vision of a fully automated software development pipelines analogous to fully automated manufacturing facilities operated by robots in the dark without humans. Chris Sells, one of the masterminds behind Gas City, offered a helpful reframe: There's a light side and a dark side of a software factory. Designing what happens in the “lights on” side, where people organize work and interact with agents, is as critically important as the “dark side”. * Sage advice from Julian Knutsen, the other mastermind behind Gas City: There has to be a good reason to add complexity. Everytime you add complexity to your business’s processes it's important to know why it's worth it (and when it's not). It's easy to get lost following shiny new AI features down a path to nowhere. If you're not sure what your destination is, don't go down the path. * Gas City Inc. (gascity.com) just launched and is positioning itself to be the Red Hat of open source software factories.
