Zen Zhang shared thisFrugal Architecture should be studied by all AWS builders. For a long time, we’ve been striving to deliver cost-effective solutions to our customers. I’ve tried at the infrastructure level, the DevOps level, but what AWS needs is an enterprise-level approach. Frugal Architecture covers three stages (three aspects from Dr. W but I think stages are better): Designing, Evaluating, and Optimizing. Werner Vogels his keynotes offers a lot of incisive thoughts on designing stage. If I could remember one thing in design stage was we need aligning cost with revenue. We have finally started structuring this from an Enterprise level. Second, we need sustainable observability, which is part of the evaluation, is critical feedback to design. Then comes optimization. New and old new technologies should be used in this stage. Keep mind open and keep learning. Be humble. As builder I often told myself, I know nothing, don't know that I don't know. But some moments feel too important not to share. On May 15, my wife and I had the honor of hooding our daughter at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry commencement. It’s hard to put into words what that moment felt like. Right after the ceremony, we went straight into a long-overdue family vacation - fully unplugged. Then came ASCO and a busy stretch of work. But I kept coming back to this moment and wanted to take the time to reflect before sharing it. The path here wasn’t easy. There were long nights, real challenges, and plenty of moments that could have gone either way. But she stayed the course with a level of focus and resilience that made all of us incredibly proud. To our daughter, Dr. Jennifer Yin - you’ve earned this. We can’t wait to see the kind of care and impact you’ll bring to your patients. And to my wife, our son, and everyone who supported her along the way—this was a family milestone as much as an individual one. Zen Zhang liked thisZen Zhang liked thisThe biggest way to sabotage yourself is to overcomplicate things. Both my Cloud and physical transformation routines are very simple. I am a late bloomer. I set foot in the gym at 35. Some’d say I started AFTER the statistical age of male peak. The only reason I was able to transform myself was that my routine was simple to follow and track. I didn’t stand on the bosu ball on one leg, balancing a dumbbell on my head. Instead, I have been following a push-pull-leg routine for years. Mostly free weights, simple proven exercises, nothing gimmicky. Started with 3 days/week. Once I saw success, I gradually increased it to 6 days/week. The same principle applied to Cloud. I didn’t try to learn everything at once. I picked a clear path, focused on fundamentals, practiced consistently, and built depth before chasing novelty. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, gain muscle, or learn Cloud or AI - pick a path that is simple to execute, then build upon it. After my column in Redmondmag this week on using semantic search in SQL Server 2025--I wanted to add on to it. Security is an overlooked piece of the AI story, and one of the advantages for enterprises of the SQL Server 2025, is that they can own the hardware, the model, and have the robust data protections of SQL Server.
