Trammell Hudson’s Summary

Over the past thirteen years I've written low-level operating systems, device drivers and message passing libraries for some of the fastest supercomputers on the Top 500. During this time I have worked with scientists in a variety of fields to port their C, C++ and FORTRAN codes to these machines to enable them to meet the Grand Challenges of our national strategic defense. I have also worked with life scientists on the building the large scale compute clusters that allowed the first sequencing of the human genome.

More recently I have been working with automated flight controls and building rotorcraft UAVs. Over the past six years I have designed an embedded avionics suite onboard the aircraft, an OpenGL ground station software suite for controlling multiple aircraft, and enhanced the simulator software for testing the flight control laws. To satisfy the demands of our military customers we have designed our own helicopter airframe and CNC manufacture it at our South Carolina facility. There are hundreds of our autopilot systems flying around the world in a variety of applications. Our low-cost systems have become very popular with academic researchers -- at the recent 2007 IARC aerial robotics contest every flying rotorcraft team was using our autopilot system.

Trammell Hudson’s Experience

  • Stunt Programmer

    OS Research

    (Computer Software industry)

    January 2003Present (6 years 7 months)

I consult with Sandia National Labs on light weight kernels for high performance computing on the 38208 cpu Cray XT3 based Red Storm system.

  • Director R&D

    Rotomotion, LLC

(Privately Held; Aviation & Aerospace industry)

    February 2002Present (7 years 6 months)

Rotomotion designs and manufactures small VTOL UAVs. Our smallest helicopter carries 2 kg for 30 minutes and our largest has a 20 kg payload with a 3 hour endurance. The onboard flight control computer handles navigation, routing and digitization of video.

  • IT Architect

    Celera Genomics

(Public Company; 201-500 employees; CRA; Biotechnology industry)

    August 2001October 2002 (1 year 3 months)

Celera successfully sequenced the first entire human genome. I worked with the software team to port the genomic assembler software from the DEC Alpha platform to additional CPUs and wrote the build system / nightly test suite for it.

  • Senior Developer

    Turbo Linux

    (Computer Networking industry)

    March 1999June 2001 (2 years 4 months)

At Turbo Linux's Turbo Labs in Santa Fe, I worked on a small team to design and implement Linux cluster management software for rapid deployment of compute clusters.

  • Member of Technical Staff

    Sandia National Labs

(Government Agency; Defense & Space industry)

    19942000 (6 years)

At Sandia I worked on the team that developed the Portals message passing library that has been used on on many of the #1 supercomputers on the Top500 list over the past ten years. I also tuned BLAS libraries to optimize performance of systems for LINPACK benchmarks.

Other projects included porting Linux and Xen to several of the machines for benchmarking our custom lightweight kernels against commodity operating systems, writing cluster management software for commodity clusters and developing thread libraries for multi-core compute nodes.
