A College Dean loves (at least) 3 things. 1) hearing that students have the first full time job of their careers prior to commencement; 2) seeing alumni give back to current students with their precious time; 3) BIG checks! I got all 3 of these in one interaction today! Our deepest appreciation to Kimley-Horn, the Kimley-Horn Foundation and their employees/ alumni for supporting student activities #BEYOND the classroom. We are grateful to Matthew Jacobson, PE, ENV SP, Anndrea Mendoza, EIT, and Katherine Wang, ENV SP for giving so much to Cal Poly Pomona College of Engineering students. Their time multiplied into Foundation giving which just highlights the commitment of Kimley-Horn to activate the next generation of impactful engineers. My thanks also to Alejandro Torres, EIT and Seema Shah-Fairbank for leading our local, award winning American Society of Civil Engineers chapter. This is industry engagement at its finest. And the #bigcheck is going to do great things for the future of student ASCE activities.

Cal State LA is gearing up for the ASCE Pacific Southwest Student Symposium (PSWS) 2026! With a month to go they are in need of some judges   Currently seeking additional volunteer judges for the Steel Bridge, Timber-Strong Design Build, and Geowall competitions. While we have secured the minimum number of judges for most events (with Geowall still needing additional support), we would greatly value a few more committed professionals to ensure full coverage—especially in the event of any last-minute cancellations. Since these competitions take place on Monday, having a strong and reliable judging panel is critical to maintaining a smooth and successful event.   Serving as a judge is more than filling a role—it is an opportunity to mentor, inspire, and support talented students who have dedicated countless hours preparing for these competitions. Your expertise provides real-world perspective, professional credibility, and meaningful feedback that helps shape their growth and confidence.   If you are available, even as a backup judge, your willingness to step forward would make a tremendous difference. Your support helps ensure fairness, continuity, and excellence throughout the symposium.   Please consider lending your time and expertise to help us deliver an outstanding experience for our students. We would be grateful to have you on the team.   NEEDED: • Steel Bridge (3/30/26): 8–10 additional judges • Timber Competition (3/30/26): 8–10 additional judges • Geowall Competition (3/30/26): 1 Head Judge and 2–3 additional judges.   Please email kquinn@quinnassociations.com

Great conversation, great turnout, and an even better reason to spend a Thursday at California State Polytechnic University-Pomona 👏 Earlier this month, ACEC Riverside/San Bernardino Chapter was proud to partner with the CPP ASCE Student Chapter for a Tech Talk Thursday panel during Engineers Week. Industry leaders Lam Le, PLS (CL Surveying & Mapping), Jeff Meiter, LS RCE (Valued Engineering), and Jason Hertzberg, PE, GE (Verdantas) joined students for an open, candid discussion on career paths, licensure, ethics, leadership, and what engineering looks like beyond the classroom. The panel shared insights on everything from early-career skills and PE licensure to entrepreneurship, dual licensure, and navigating tough ethical decisions—exactly the kind of real-world perspective students are eager to hear. Huge thanks to the CPP ASCE officers and faculty for hosting and to the students for the thoughtful questions and engagement. Events like this highlight the value of collaboration between practicing professionals and future engineers, and we’re already looking forward to the next one. #ACEC #ASCE #EngineersWeek #CalPolyPomona #FutureEngineers #ProfessionalDevelopment #CivilEngineering
